Book review and signed giveaway! The Choice by Nicholas Sparks

2 Mar

the choiceHow far would you go to keep the hope of love alive?

Travis Parker has it all: a good job, loyal friends and his dream home in North Carolina. The last thing he’s looking for is a serious relationship. That is, until Gabby Holland moves in next door.

Despite Travis’s attempts to be friendly, the alluring redhead simply will not warm to him. But Travis feels compelled to get closer to her, leading them both down a road where they will face tough decisions, shocking revelations and devastating consequences.

The Choice is one of Nicholas Sparks earlier novels. Originally published in 2007, the book is being re-released this month with the lovely cover here to coincide with the release of the film of the book which comes out on 4th March. I was invited by publisher Sphere to take part in their ‘Read it before you see it’ blog tour and having enjoyed several of Nicholas’s recent books, I jumped at the chance.

Sphere has also kindly provided a signed copy of the book for me to give away to one lucy reader – full details at the end of this review!

The Choice is the story of Travis and Gabby. The book opens with a prologue set in 2007 as Travis heads to the hospital where his wife works filled with concerns about his actions and worries about the future of his relationship and family.

Choice is an important theme through the book with Gabby having to make a choice about the man she loves. The characters very much choose their own destinies, Gabby fighting against the expectations of her mother to live an independent life and ultimately Travis has to make a difficult choice about the future of his relationship and family.

As with all of the Nicholas Sparks books that I’ve read, he’s at his best when writing about the development of the relationship between his characters. We know that Travis and Gabby in 2007 are married with children but as the story flashes back 11 years they are new neighbours that haven’t met yet and and the intrigue of the story is how they got together and the ever present question of what Travis has done in the present to put his relationship in danger.

Sparks has created a lovely romantic lead in Travis; a vet who likes travel and high octane hobbies like paragliding and dirt bike riding. As we begin to get to know him, Travis is perfectly happy with his single status despite being the only one if his friends not coupled up. Gabby on the other hand has been in a relationship for four years and recently moved to her new home to be closer to boyfriend. She’s hoping he’ll propose soon and is ready to settle down.

As with many of the best pairings Travis and Gabby don’t get off to the best of starts and I liked Gabby’s feisty attitude even if it was misplaced some of the time! I also loved Travis’s sister Stephanie who isn’t afraid to speak her mind and has some striking insights throughout the story.

The Choice is in turns romantic, fun, dramatic and emotional and I’m now really looking forward to seeing the film version.

The Choice is out now in paperback and ebook formats.

I’d like to thank the publisher for providing a review copy of this book.

Nicholas Sparks’ books are my daughter’s favourite. Being housebound due to M.E./Chronic pain, reading is her passion. Getting her a signed copy of this book would be amazing and would be something positive in her life for a change :)
