Book review: Save the Date! by Allie Spencer

Family weddings can be hell…

…and, marooned in Italy for her cousin’s nuptials, Ailsa can be forgiven for thinking that this one is worse than most. With the bride and groom at loggerheads and the guests in uproar, it is a million miles away from the rest and relaxation she’d been hoping for.

And then suddenly, in the middle of the mayhem, she comes face-to-face with Nick, the man she walked out on just a few months earlier.

How can Ailsa help get the wedding back on track when she and Nick can’t stop arguing? But if they do, she might remember why she fell in love with him in the first place – and then there really would be trouble.

Save the Date! is another lovely romantic comedy from Allie Spencer.  Set in Italy during the week long preparations for her cousin’s wedding, the book follows Ailsa as she runs from her relationship problems right into the middle of a whole host of wedding and family related dramas.

I love Allie’s writing style and her books never fail to make me smile. The story is written from Ailsa’s point of view and straight away I could see that she was a girl I could identify with. Her funny quips and observations made me laugh and it was very easy to become involved in Alisa’s world. As the story opens, Ailsa is nursing a broken heart having walked out on her ex, Nick. As she receives an email from her cousin begging her to attend her week long wedding celebration in Tuscany, she grabs the opportunity to escape her troubles for the sunshine.

Alisa’s family and the other wedding guests are a pretty eccentric bunch. From her flighty cousin Jess to flustered Aunt Sheila and overbearing Uncle Dudley; Ailsa finds herself at the centre of one wedding catastrophe after another. There are some very funny moments in this book and I loved the light-hearted feel to it. Combined with the gorgeous location descriptions and the luxury hotel wedding venue this is a fab escapist read.

But there’s also a magical romantic side to the story and as Ailsa finds herself face to face with her ex there are some major surprises in store! I absolutely did not see the twist in the plot coming which made me enjoy this book all the more – I love it when a story surprises me. And this wasn’t the only twist in the tale. I couldn’t read fast enough to find out what would happen and would Ailsa and Nick be able to put their differences aside.

There’s also a lovely thread about family running through the novel. Ailsa’s and Jess’ mums fell out many years ago and Ailsa and her sister Kitty also have a testy relationship. But there’s nothing like a wedding to bring everyone together … is there?!

I really enjoyed Save the Date! but there was one character who stole the show for me; Arthur the puppy. Like Ailsa, I’m not normally a dog person but little Arthur won me over with his cute antics!  With its sunny location and funny romantic story line, this is an ideal book to pop in your suitcase (or on your e-reader) this summer. Guaranteed to leave you with a smile on your face :-)
